I don’t like riding in the dark … I was sick for 2 weeks and I was scared of the Energizer Night Relay… I was looking for excuses… The weather was bad.. misty and then rainy… it means mud… mud in the dark didn’t sound good to me.

BUT… I got to the venue and it looked amazing in the mist… with all the branding around… with all the tents and lights and people. It looks like fun! I started to relax a little… I was watching people running around, drinking hot coffee and ready to braai… I was starting to feel happy to be part of something like the Energizer Night Relay. I set up my bike with my lights… the energizer light on my helmet… and I felt ready to ride. My partner Amy-Jane Mundy only arrived half an hour before the race start… I was so nervous… but it is just me…
We agreed not to race hard since she had a hard day and I had a flu… I was the first rider and I wasn’t feeling comfortable at the beginning… I was riding behind young kids… they were fearless… they were speeding down the hills… I didn’t know what to do but soon I got used to my lights and the weather and I started to enjoy it! I had so much fun. I loved my lights… I didn’t have any problems… the course was fun… enjoyable… not too hard but technical enough to be challenging in the dark. The mud just made it even more fun. And yes.. I was racing it after a while… I couldn’t stop myself… Amy had the same time as me, which means that she pushed it too… but again.. we are racing snakes…we want to push it…

The best lap was when Amy and I were riding together… she is soo funny… and it was so cool to ride in the dark with friends around… racing but not really. I couldn’t stop smiling… we were pretending to race some guys from Moffatt Optical… he he.. but we were just fooling around… of course we came before them… we couldn’t let them to beat us…

It was the first time I raced at the Energizer Night Relay… and
…I love riding in the dark!
